Will AAA Insure a Converted Van? What You Need to Know

AAA won't insure van conversions and has dropped roadside coverage for them too. What AAA told owners and which carriers actually cover converted vans.

The Van Guide

AAA does not insure DIY van conversions. When asked directly, AAA representatives have told van owners that they do not cover “any kind of converted van.” For a full overview of which carriers do and don’t cover converted vans, see the camper van insurance guide.

This is a short article because there is not much to explain. AAA’s position is straightforward, and unlike State Farm (where outcomes vary by agent), AAA’s refusal appears consistent across regions and representatives.

What AAA Told Owners

On The Wandering Woods blog, an owner building a DIY Sprinter conversion contacted AAA directly. The representative stated AAA does not insure “any kind of converted van.” The reason given was “because of the weight” — which the owner noted seemed unlikely as the actual rationale, since converted Sprinters typically weigh less than factory-built Class B motorhomes that AAA does cover. Regardless of the stated reason, the result was a flat refusal.

On Sprinter-Source, owners reported that AAA became hesitant as soon as the word “conversion” came up. One owner had initial success using a licensed appraiser to document the build, but outcomes varied and no consistent path to coverage emerged.

AAA Also Dropped Roadside Assistance for Conversion Vans

In January 2021, AAA changed its towing policy to exclude “conversion vans” from consumer roadside assistance coverage. This is separate from insurance, but it means AAA’s exclusion of converted vehicles extends beyond just insurance — their roadside product will not tow a converted van either.

On the Ford Transit USA Forum, owners confirmed that AAA’s consumer roadside assistance policies do not cover commercially registered vehicles, which includes many converted vans that have not been retitled as motorhomes.

If you rely on AAA for roadside assistance, verify that your membership covers your specific vehicle before assuming you can call for a tow.

Why AAA Refuses

AAA’s RV insurance products are designed for factory-built recreational vehicles with standardized specifications. AAA’s vehicle insurance pages do not list van conversions, DIY builds, or modified vehicles as covered vehicle types. Like GEICO, AAA’s underwriting is built around standardized vehicles — there is no mechanism in their system to evaluate a one-off DIY build.

AAA also operates through a club structure with regional variations (AAA Northern California, AAA SoCal, AAA Northeast, etc.), but the refusal to cover converted vans appears consistent across regions based on available owner reports.

Roadside assistance alternatives: If you need roadside coverage independent of your insurance carrier, Good Sam Roadside Assistance covers RVs and converted vans regardless of your insurance carrier. Coach-Net is another option that covers Class B motorhomes and converted vans.
